Please join us for an online meetup with Kelly Charniga on applying R to public health challenges while serving as a Prevention Effectiveness Fellow at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Topic: As a Prevention Effectiveness Fellow at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Kelly had the opportunity to apply R to interesting public health challenges. In this talk, she'll share two projects that show how R moves beyond academic exercises into work that directly impacts public health.
First, she'll walk through how she used existing R packages to model mpox transmission potential ahead of the 2022 global outbreak. You'll see the practical side of epidemiological modelling—the packages she relied on, the data challenges she faced, and how the results foreshadowed the current mpox epidemic in Africa.
Next, she'll discuss developing an RShiny app for rabies risk assessments that's now being used across the U.S. She'll share the development process, from initial concept to deployment, including the lessons learned about building tools for non-technical end users.
Whether you're curious about public health applications of R, interested in Shiny development, or wondering how your R skills might translate to government work, this talk will give you concrete examples and practical insights you can apply to your own projects.
