**Abstract**: After finishing my biostats PhD 8 years ago, I started working as a machine learning engineer in the tech industry, and am now working my 4th startup job. While startups and academia do have a lot in common, startups force you to generalize (develop breadth) while other career tracks reward specialization (depth). I'll share a bit about how I've thought about building a fulfilling career as a generalist and how common themes between different application areas really make that possible!

Alyssa got a PhD in biostatistics at Johns Hopkins in 2015, worked on credit card fraud models for 5 years at Stripe, spent 2020 writing R and JavaScript to help Democrats win their elections, built bookkeeping software for a year, and now works on risk/fraud prevention at a 100-person payroll startup. She's based in the Bay Area and loves to make pizza.
