Over the past several years, two technologies have undergirded many of the most innovative research projects and tools developed by the Urban Institute: the R programming language and Amazon Web Services (AWS) Lambda. Despite their respective prevalence, R and Lambda have largely existed in isolation because Lambda does not natively support R. The presentation will describe efforts to address this barrier. The framework for running R code using AWS Lambda and examples of projects will be discussed.

Erika Tyagi is a lead data engineer at the Urban Institute, where she builds data-intensive tools and systems that involve data engineering, data science, and web development components. She also co-leads Urban’s Python users group and cloud governance committee. Tyagi is an experienced Python and R programmer, as well as an AWS certified solutions architect. She holds a BA in economics and international relations from Carleton College and an MS in computational analysis and public policy from the University of Chicago.
