Data viz for mass audiences with Juliette O'Brien

Details

Hi Everyone!

We are very excited to announce our next R Ladies Melbourne meetup event where we will hear from Juliette O'Brien on the topic of "Data viz for mass audiences".

The Covid-19 pandemic has been a data-driven story at its core. It has presented many new challenges, opportunities, and insights about effective data visualisation. Juliette will talk about her experiences and lessons from running covid19data.com.au – Australia’s first Covid tracker (used by more than 3 million Australians, as well as many news media, business and government organisations). Her talk will address questions like: How to design data viz for a mass audience? What level of data literacy should we aim for? Have audience expectations changed after the pandemic? And how can you get your work picked up by news media?

Juliette is a digital and data journalist. She is the creator of covid19data.com.au, Australia's first website tracking the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been used by more than 3 million Australians, as well as many news media, business and government organisations. The site was a finalist in the Walkley journalism awards 2020 for innovation. Juliette is also the author of a national best-selling memoir, This Is Gail (HarperCollins, 2016). She has worked at The Sydney Morning Herald, SBS, NITV and Bauer Media, and consults in digital strategy, communications and data storytelling for clients. Juliette is currently teaching and coordinating Data and Computational Journalism at University of Technology, Sydney.

Please connect to the zoom session at 5.30pm AEST on Thursday 7th of April 2022.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the event!
