haRd at woRk: flash talks on using R in the workplace

Details

Hello R-Ladies!

Mark your calendars for our first ever Flash Talk event on January 18th!! R is one of the most popular programming languages in the world and is used across many different industries, from research to healthcare and everything in between (check out some examples here).

We’ll be hearing from a handful of R-Ladies and learn how they use R in their professional work:

  • Andrea Blackburn (Santa Barbara Zoo) & Laura McMahon (US Fish & Wildlife): Using R to monitor and research wild California condor nesting patterns
  • Summer Broeckx-Smith (Geosyntec Consultants): As You Wish! Using R Within Your Organization’s SOPs
  • Daphne Virlar-Knight (Arctic Data Center): Curating Metadata with R
  • Tanya Rogers (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration): Developing R packages to facilitate team collaboration and data access
  • Jasmine Lai (Aggregate Genius Inc.): Building Shiny Applications

This event is open to all R-users, from the R-curious to the R-obsessed, and will be held in-person at the National Center for Ecological Analysis & Synthesis (NCEAS). We’ll begin our evening with a half-hour of mingling and light refreshments, then move into our intros and flash talks promptly at 6:00pm. Each flash talk will be 5 minutes long, followed by 5 minutes of Q&A.

Getting to NCEAS: We are located at 1021 Anacapa St. and the entrance to the building is accessed from City Lot #8 (see “MEDS Entrance” here). It’s free to park in the lot for the first 75 min, then $2.50 thereafter. There is also plenty of free parking on the surrounding streets.

We look forward to seeing you at NCEAS in the new year!

Your R-Ladies SB co-organizers,
Sam, An, Camila, & Danielle

Please note: While masks are currently optional, we kindly ask that if you are not feeling well that you please refrain from attending this event. We have a number of exciting events planned for the new year, so this certainly won’t be the last chance to learn about R with our community! Thank you.
