Creativity, AI Art and Copyright

For our Tuesday, May 9th RMAIIG meeting (6 PM MDT, Zoom), we'll unpack the question, "What does it mean to create in the age of generative AI?" Our panel of artists and technologists will cover AI image generation tools and how they work, as well as the question of how creativity works while using AI tools. What's the same and what is different from current practice? Do AI tools mean the end of human creation and art or simply the dawning of a new chapter of human creativity? And why won't the United States Copyright Office currently register copyright for AI-generated art?

Our first speaker is Dr. Anthony T. Pinter, who is a teaching
assistant professor in the ATLAS Institute at CU Boulder. He teaches
courses in the Creative Technology & Design program on web
development, computational thinking and programming, and how data
represents us, our lives and the worlds around us. Drawing on
inspiration from philosophers, writers, activists and artists, he will
speak on creativity in the age of AI and what generative AI could
enable us to do as creatives and technologists.

Our next speaker, Mark Amerika, is an artist, theorist, novelist and
professor of Art and Art History. His digital artwork has been
exhibited at the Whitney Biennial of American Art as well as the
Denver Art Museum and the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.
His current exhibition, "Mark Amerika. Remixing Reality. 1993-2023."
is on view at the Marlborough Gallery in Barcelona, Spain. He is the
author of many books including his most recent title, "My Life as an
Artificial Creative Intelligence" (Stanford University Press 2022). He
will speak about the use of AI image generation tools as a
professional artist and his life and work as a creative.

Our final speaker, Jason M Allen, is a game designer from Pueblo who
has used AI art tools such as Midjourney to create striking digital
images. In fact, he won First Place in the digital arts competition
at the Colorado State Fair last year using AI-generated art and
received international media attention. More recently, he’s leading a
nationwide movement to spur change in US copyright law after the U.S.
Copyright Office rejected his copyright claim on AI-generated artwork.
He will speak about his AI art experiences and current battle to
update US Copyright law in the new era of AI art.
