SML Paddle for Sea Kayaks/Long Boats
Details
This paddle on Smith Mountain Lake (SML) is for people with sea kayaks at least 16 feet long … or longer touring kayaks. The touring kayaks must be at least 14 feet long and no wider than 25 inches. The reason for these specifications is we will be paddling at a faster pace (around 3 mph) than most recreational kayaks can keep up with.
Be ready to launch at 10:00 AM at the Hardy Ford Boat Landing on Smith Mountain Lake. We will launch from the small, sand/gravel beach on the West side of the parking lot and avoid the concrete boat ramp. We will paddle downstream this time for about four miles, take an on-water, snack/water break, then paddle back. We will be off the water NLT 1:30 pm. Bring plenty of water and some snacks.
Life jackets are required and must be worn. Spray skirts are recommended. You must register for this trip on the Meet-Up site prior to the event. Your kayak must meet the minimum size requirements. As of this posting, the weather is looking good. Any questions, post in comments.
The Hardy Ford Boat Landing is on Virginia route 634 at the Southwest corner of its intersection with Smith Mountain Lake about 1.5 miles East of Hardy, VA. Pit latrines are available at the launch and no launch/daily fee is required.
