How governments can adapt to policy challenges of AI and Robotics

Details
For our September meetup, we will be hearing from Dr. Aaron Mannes to talk about the challenges governments at all levels face in creating policies to accommodate AI and robotics.
Our topic: Autonomous systems (robots) will pose vast new challenges to governance. State, local, federal, and international governmental bodies will need to wrestle with the regulation of these new systems, as well as addressing likely large-scale system failures and large-scale social change. These issues may require new laws, but implementation of these new policies will challenge existing agencies. This talk takes an organizational perspective in considering how governments can adapt to the new policy challenges raised by autonomous systems.
Our speaker: Dr. Aaron Mannes was an American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow at the Department of Homeland Security. He has written extensively on robotics and technology policy issues as well as terrorism and international affairs. Prior to being awarded a AAAS Fellowship, he was the subject matter expert at a University of Maryland computer lab that modeled terrorist group behavior where he co-authored three books on terrorism in South Asia. He earned a PhD at the Maryland School of Public Policy, where he did his dissertation on the national security role of the vice president.
A dial-in will be provided in the comment section below no later than the evening before the talk for those who cannot come in person. If you are planning on attending in person, please leave a comment below.
Slides: If there are slides, a link to see the slides will appear in the comment section below. This link will expire at the end of the talk, but we will distribute a pdf of any slides by a link to a download afterwards, again in the comment section.
We hope you can attend the program, and thank you for your interest.
