Our topic: AI Impact Assessments as a Tool for Compliance and Risk Management

In the world of data protection, we have GDPR data protection impact assessments (DPIAs) to help businesses identify and minimize data protection risks of a project, service, or line of business, especially when data processing is likely to result in a high risk to individuals’ privacy. In the environmental field, we have environmental assessments to determine the impact of a new construction project on the environment. In the field of public health, we have health impact assessments, which allow policymakers to evaluate the potential health effects of a plan, project, or a policy before it is implemented. What can these governance and planning tools teach us about governing artificial intelligence?

More specifically, would it be useful to create “artificial intelligence impact assessments”? Would they add value for businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies? Or would they just be a “check the box” exercise whose only result would be more paperwork?

In this open discussion kicked off by introductory information, we explore precedents for artificial intelligence impact assessments (AIIAs), the possible value of AIIAs, and what an AIIA would look like. We will also cover the lifecycle of AIIAs. Please be prepared to share your own ideas about AIIAs.
