The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) is the first film in Peter Jackson's prequel trilogy to The Lord of the Rings, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, following Bilbo Baggins as he joins a company of dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield on a quest to reclaim their mountain home from the dragon Smaug. The film, starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Ian McKellen as Gandalf, was a major box office success and is known for being shot in 48 frames per second (FPS).
