The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) is the first film in Peter Jackson's prequel trilogy to The Lord of the Rings, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, following Bilbo Baggins as he joins a company of dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield on a quest to reclaim their mountain home from the dragon Smaug. The film, starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Ian McKellen as Gandalf, was a major box office success and is known for being shot in 48 frames per second (FPS). It was followed by The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)
