Cancelled: End of Summer, Start of Fall Croton Point Park Hike & Picnic
Details
Lets’ bring summer to a close with a return visit to Croton Point Park, a perfect spot for a scenic hike/walk and picnic overlooking the Hudson!
Croton is named for the sachem, Kenoten, meaning "wild wind", which can be refreshing in summer and bitter in winter monthes. The park, is the site of The Clearwater Festival and is a great place, for picnicking, riding a bike, windsailing, flying miniature airplanes(for which there is a designated area) or just hanging out, to take in the views. This will be a 1 - 2 hour hike at a slow/mod. pace on gravel, woods trails, grass, beach & some paved areas w/ one or two gentle inclines. We will walk past old, English yews, to views of the TZ Bridge and Hook Mt., past marshlands, old wine cellars and up to the bluffs with meadows and 360 degree panoramic views. Eagles, owls and butterflies during the summer are often observed here.
Pants tucked into socks and supportive hiking shoes, boots or sneakers recommended. The crushed rock, gravel trails can be hard on the feet and you want to protect against ticks by tucking pants into socks for the grassy areas. Sun protection and MANDATORY WATER also necessary. Don't forget the Kites, frisbees, games and bubbles. :0)
PLEASE POST what you plan to bring for the picnic so we don’t get too much of any one thing. Let's' enjoy another special riverside park while the season lasts! Think of Autumn and pumpkins.
Don’t forget your COOLERS WITH ICE which will be left in our cars til after the hike. Please bring SERVING UTENSILS for your dishes and PLEASE find homes for your leftovers. Alcohol is not allowed.
You may also want to bring a chair and layers for the cooler night air though there are plenty of picnic tables. Hope to snatch picnic area 4, 3,2 or 1 which if not rented we can use. If you plan to grill let me know as I have starter fluid and charcoal which I could bring but would need help with. GAS GRILLS ARE NOT ALLOWED.
WITH COVID ON THE RISE I SUGGEST SNACKS AND FOODS THAT DON'T INVOLVE THE CO-MINGLING OF HANDS, SUCH AS CHIPS, ETC. OR WE CAN USE SERVING UTENSILS TO DOLE OUT. NO "DOUBLE DIPPING". :0)
PARKING SHOULD BE FREE THIS TIME OF THE YEAR, OTHERWISE PARKING IS $10 per car on weekends for non Westchester residents or those w/o the Westschester Park Permit. If you have a Westchester Parks Permit then the daily fee would be $5, $1 for seniors on weekdays, $5 on weekends. . Carpooling suggested. Fees subject to change.
Restrooms available by office and other areas.
Inclement weather cancels. ALWAYS CHECK THE DAY OF AN EVENT FOR ANY CHANGES.
DIRECTIONS: From Route 9, take Croton Point Ave.,turn west towards the river and follow signs into the park. Drive straight to the end, which will bring you to the parking lot on your left, for picnic areas 1 & 2, by the nature center sign, where we'll meet.
