Edgewater River Walk
Details
Mild weather is forecast so let's get moving and enjoy some stunning views along our beautiful Hudson River. If we're lucky we may spot the adorable Monk/Quaker parrots or even an Eagle or two as we have before! The ice on the river should also be a site to behold!
The infamous Quaker/Monk Parrots have made Edgewater their year round home. During the winter they can be less visible though we usually see a few.
Check out "Save the Wild Quaker parrots of New Jersey" group on Facebook. Walk along Undercliff Ave. and check the trees and some utility poles for nest sites. The Old Mariners Bank sign on the east side of River Rd. just south of the Marina may also be a nest site.
Here are two links with varying explanations for the existence of these birds in Edgewater: https://weirdnj.com/stories/bizarre-beasts/edgewater-parrots/
The walk will be 2-3 hours at a slow, mod. pace covering approx. 3-6 miles with several stops. Early out option.
The paths are mostly flat, with a few gentle inclines, made of cobblestone, brick and pavement with some dips and uneven spots so CAREFUL footing is necessary. Keep to the right on the path to allow everyone to pass comfortably.
Water is MANDATORY. I suggest waterproof hiking shoes or boots in case of any wet areas, along with snacks, binoculars, sun protection and cameras of course. Dress in layers.
MEETUP IN RIVER END OF FRONT PARKING LOT. Upon leaving the front entrance of Target, turn left and walk to the end of the lot, toward the Hudson River.
Remember to leave yourself extra time as it's a busy area.
Rest rooms are available in Target in the right rear corner of the store along with other stores. Possible Comfort Station by the Ferry pier when we head north.
Frozen Yogurt, Mitsuwa Asian Market, The River House Chinese Rest., The Bicycle Club and many restaurants available for those interested after the walk.
Inclement weather cancels. ALWAYS check the day of an event for possible updates.
As with all of our events, you are responsible for your own safety and the safety of your guests. Knowing this you agree to walk/hike at your own risk and we cannot be held responsible for any injuries you or your guests may incur.
