“Without rules, we quickly become slaves to our passions-and there’s nothing freeing about that. The best rules do not ultimately restrict us but instead facilitate our goals and make for fuller, freer lives.” Norman Doidge (Forward from 12 rules)
“Hatred for self and mankind must be balanced with gratefulness for tradition and the state of astonishment at what normal, everyday people accomplish. We deserve some respect. You deserve some respect. You are important to other people as much as to yourself. You have some vital role to play in the unfolding destiny of the world. You are, therefore, morally obliged to take care of yourself. You should take care of help and be good to yourself the same way you would take care of help and be good to someone you loved and valued. You may, therefore, have to conduct yourself habitually in a manner that allows you some respect for your own being.” - Jordan Peterson

Book reviewer excerpts:
David A. French of National Review considered it as a "beacon of light" for current time, with a simple but profound purpose of "to help a person look in the mirror and respect the person he or she sees".
Dorothy Cummings McLean, writing for The Catholic World, considered it as "the most thought-provoking self-help book I have read in years", the rules for life reminding her of those by Bernard Lonergan, and content "serving as a bridge between Christians and non-Christians interested in the truths of human life and in resisting the lies of ideological totalitarianism".
Melanie Reid of The Times, says the book is "aimed at teenagers, millennials and young parents". Summarizing it, she states: "If you peel back the verbiage, the cerebral preening, you are left with a hardline self-help manual of self-reliance, good behavior, self-betterment and individualism that probably reflects [Peterson's] childhood in rural Canada in the 1960s."
