History
Hortus Arboretum started in 1999 when artists Allyson Levy and Scott Serrano bought 3 acres of land and began planting native trees, shrubs, perennials and edible plants, eventually starting their own gardening landscaping company to support their passion. In 2009 they purchased an additional 8 acres, clearing 3 more acres for specific plant collections, including endangered and edible species. A type of edible experimental station featuring marginal food species while testing cold hardiness and yields, it is a study in resilience. In 2017 Hortus was awarded Level II arboretum accreditation and in 2019 became the nonprofit Hortus Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.
