What really happens when you type a question into that little search bar? Behind the friendly simplicity of “just Google it” lies one of the most complex and powerful systems ever built.
Surprisingly, the foundations are not hard to grasp: it’s about relatively simple calculations — but done in very, very large numbers on specialized computers that can compute results with breathtaking speed. The real fun comes in seeing how these models are formed and how they shape what we find online.
At this week’s luncheon, we’ll take a high-level look at how Google actually works:
- 🌐 The Models – the mathematical frameworks and approximations that make searching billions of websites possible in milliseconds
- 🧠 The Algorithms – the ranking principles that decide what you see first
We’re honored to have our own Rotarian, Margot Gerritsen — Professor in Computational Mathematics and Engineering at Stanford University and founder of the global Women in Data Science nonprofit — walk us through the fascinating story of “How Google Googles.”
✅ RSVP today on Meetup!
👉 Rotarian guests: Please DM me or send me a text in advance so I can introduce you, ensure a proper Rotary experience, and extend our offer of a complimentary lunch.
