Keep your dependencies in check & 10 programming jokes

Details

Another Rotterdam JUG meetup is now scheduled.

This time our co-host is **Developers.nl**, a Dutch software development company from Rotterdam with, next to PHP, frontend and Python, also a big group of Java developers.

Again we have to amazing speakers, both of which spoke at J-Spring 2022 (and a lot of other conferences!). First we have Marit van Dijk, she's going to help us to keep our dependencies in check; what tools and tricks can you use to automatically do this for your Java project?

After that we have fellow Rotterdammer Peter Hilton with a lighter topic: he'll share his 10 favourite programming jokes. But behind every joke is a (more serious) story and explanation.

And we'll finish with some networking and drinks.

Schedule:

17:00: Doors are open, food and drinks, welcome!

18:00: Keep your dependencies in check

If Log4Shell, Spring4Shell, etc. have taught us anything, it's that we need to keep our dependencies up to date. But updating our applications can take a lot of time. How do we stay on top of that, while also continuing to deliver business value?

Luckily, there are plenty of tools that can help us with this, from package managers to bots that can automatically create changes on our repositories. Let's go over some of the different options, so we can make informed choices about what's best for us in a particular situation.

19:00: Peter's 10 favourite programming jokes

In this talk, Peter will share his favourite programming jokes. Some of them are even funny. What’s more, Peter is going to explain them all properly, which is probably why he doesn’t get invited to parties.

In the middle of serious explanations and actually-funny variations of standard jokes, attendees will discover the serious side to programmer humour. Attendees will cringe at old jokes, laugh at new ones, and learn about how programming jokes form a critical part of our shared cultural identity.

20:00: Networking with some drinks
21:00: Time to go home.

Our guest speakers:

Marit van Dijk is a Developer Advocate at JetBrains. She is a software developer with 20 years of experience in different roles and companies. She loves building awesome software with amazing people and has contributed to open-source projects like Cucumber and various other projects. She enjoys learning new things as well as sharing knowledge on programming, test automation, Cucumber/BDD, and software engineering. She speaks at international conferences, in webinars, and on podcasts, occasionally writes blog posts, and contributed to the book "97 Things Every Java Programmer Should Know" (O'Reilly Media).

Peter Hilton is a product manager, developer, writer, speaker, trainer, and musician. Peter’s professional interests are no-code automation, software functional design, agile software development methods, and software documentation. Peter consults for software companies and development teams, and delivers the occasional presentation and workshop.

Peter has previously presented at numerous European developer conferences, co-authored ‘Play for Scala’ (Manning Publications), and has taught ‘Fast Track to Play with Scala’, and more recently his own training course on ‘How to write maintainable code’.
