### 1. The Instrument Itself
- Parts of the violin: scroll, pegs, fingerboard, bridge, f-holes, tailpiece, chinrest. Understanding what each does prevents mystery and confusion.
- The bow: horsehair stretched with tension, controlled by the frog. Beginners learn not just how to hold it, but also how not to destroy it.
### 2. Posture and Setup
- Holding the violin: balanced between chin and shoulder, not a death grip. Proper posture prevents strain and frees the left hand.
- Bow hold: flexible fingers and relaxed hand, avoiding stiffness that kills sound.
### 3. Producing Sound
- Open strings: first exercises focus on drawing a clean, steady tone on the four strings (G, D, A, E).
- Bow placement: staying parallel to the bridge, experimenting with pressure and speed. This is the “alchemy” of sound.
### 4. Left Hand Fundamentals
- Finger placement: starting with first position (the lowest notes on each string). No frets here—just the ear. Intonation is a lifelong battle.
- Simple scales: usually A major or D major, training the fingers and ear simultaneously.
###
### 6. Ear Training
- Tuning: listening for the perfect fifth between strings.
- Intonation practice: learning to adjust finger placement until the pitch rings true.
### 7. First Pieces
- Folk tunes: Twinkle variations, simple folk songs. They seem trivial but are deceptively useful for mastering bow control and coordination.
- Duets with a teacher: helps with timing, listening, and confidence.
### 8. Discipline of Practice
- Short, focused sessions: 10–20 minutes at first, since physical strain builds quickly.
- Regular tuning and setup rituals: treating the instrument as a living companion.
