“The city of Enkarabis rises like a dark jewel in the wastelands, its air heavy with dust and its streets ruled by ruthless guilds. Life here isn’t fair, and survival isn’t guaranteed. Outside the walls, the wastelands are worse—a brutal, empty expanse where only the strongest make it. But even inside Enkarabis, it’s no paradise. You survive because you’re part of something bigger. You are members of the Crimson Covenant, the most feared assassins’ guild in the city. For you, it’s not just a job—it’s your way of staying alive. You’ve earned your place with blood and skill, carving a path through the ranks while following the guild’s iron rules: obey the contract, trust no one, and leave no trace. Because in this guild, mistakes aren’t forgiven—they’re buried. Enkarabis runs on fear and ambition, but under it all, the Crimson Covenant keeps the order. Without them, the whole city might fall apart.

Your party has been tasked by Lilith, the guild master, to investigate a serious threat lurking within the city. Recently, members of the Rustweavers Guild returned from a perilous expedition in the wastelands, where they were searching for rare minerals. The head foreman recounted a disturbing event during their last mission. While exploring a deep cave, the team got separated. Suddenly, blood-curdling screams echoed through the tunnels, sending chills down their spines. When they regrouped, there were no bodies or evidence of an attack—just an unnerving silence and the feeling that something was watching them.

Upon the expedition’s return to the city, the Ashen Legion—guardians of Enkarabis’s defenses—uncovered alarming damage to the protective wards near the Rustweavers Guild entrance. Something managed to breach the city’s defenses, slipping past the barriers undetected. The timing of the breach was too coincidental to ignore, occurring shortly after the Rustweavers returned. Whether the intruder arrived with them, followed them, or used their activities as a distraction remains a mystery. No concrete evidence links the Rustweavers to the breach, but the circumstances raise more questions than answers.

Your mission is clear: uncover what this intruder is, identify anyone it is connected to in the guild, and eliminate it. Do so quietly, if possible. The Rustweavers themselves may not be much of a threat, but their control over powerful golems makes them dangerous to provoke. Tread carefully—one misstep could turn this investigation into a citywide disaster.”

This is a level 6, D&D 5e (2024) adventure that takes place in the city of Enkarabis, located in the wastelands of my homebrew world of Devlosest. All members of the party are part of the Crimson Covenant, an assassins’ guild, and have been in the guild for a reasonable amount of time. Enkarabis is the only city in the wastelands, and your character was either born here or sent to this desolate place for their crimes.

When creating your character for the session, please consider an evil alignment. While the rogue class is available for character creation, I encourage players to explore other creative ways to build a talented assassin.

We will use Discord and D&D Beyond to plan the game session and create characters.

Character Creation

D&D 2024 updates are in effect as per the backwards compatibility guidelines.

Race/Species: All allowed.

Class: All allowed, except Artificer and Blood Hunter. (Firearms are prohibited). Multi-classing is also allowed. (2024 classes only. This can still include sub-classes from 2014.)

Background: A background includes the following:

(1) Ability Scores. A background lists three of your character’s ability scores. Increase one by 2 and another one by 1, or increase all three by 1. None of these increases can raise a score above 20.

(2) Feat. A background gives your character a specified Origin feat.

(3) Skill Proficiencies. A background gives your character proficiency in two specified skills.

(4) Tool Proficiency. Each background gives a character proficiency with one tool—either a specific tool or one chosen from the Artisan’s Tools category.

(5) Equipment. Each background offers a choice between a package of equipment and 50 GP.

Stats: Standard array or point buy for generating stats.

Starting Level: All characters will start at level 6. This will provide the opportunity to create moderately powerful PCs.

Health Point Type: Fixed.

Magic Items and Equipment: You will all have the starting gear for your characters. In addition, please choose one magic item of rare classification or lower to add to your PC. Potions and scrolls are also considered magic items and are therefore included as a potential choice. I would suggest items that aren’t necessarily powerful but rather something that compliments your characters persona or back story. You are free to choose any magic items within the parameters provided however. All characters have 300 gold pieces. Feel free to spend this on spell components or other equipment your PC may have on them after adventuring for such a long time. (Homebrew magic items are prohibited).

I look forward to playing with you all!
