No Sinister Params, No Injuries and No Feature Fridays!

Details

After a January spent recovering from everything Christmas can throw at us, 2018 gets underway for Ruby Ireland in February at Workday's fab offices. Workday (https://www.workday.com/) are avid users of Ruby who, in addition to the venue, will also be supplying drinks on the evening (thanks!). Though you're familiar with agile development we'll also be changing up to "athletic development" - with sports & Ruby loving Kitman Labs (http://www.kitmanlabs.com/) on hand to sponsor the evening's pizza. So there will be plenty to digest, in addition to these three great talks...

### Validation in Sinatra by Vasyl Purchel ###

Is it too costly to build good a REST API in ruby that customers will like to use? And how can the approaches in our open source gem can simplify this for you?

In this talk, I will show a simple REST API and why parameters validation matters. What existing solutions can give you and how validate_my_routes (Sinatra extension developed in Workday) simplifies this task. I will also discuss DSL provided by our gem and how it makes validate_my_routes easily extensible and gives a developer friendly validation framework.

### Logistic Regression In Ruby by Chris McGrath ###

Wikipedia's definition is, "a regression model where the dependent variable (DV) is categorical." Great! Thankfully, Chris is here to translate Logistic Regression into plain English and explain how it's used in machine learning at Kitman Labs to help coaches keep athletes uninjured and on the pitch.

### History of the Ruby Study group in Workday with Alberto Belmonte ###

How can engineers keep learning new technologies or programming languages while delivering business value for our companies?

In this talk, Alberto will present multiple learning initiatives that have helped him and his team to become better engineers. He’ll also give some suggestions about how to implement them in your company - through the Ruby Study Group and the No Feature Friday. The Ruby Study Group is a meetup style meeting where engineers from multiple teams get together and discuss topics about Ruby, try new gems, share testing techniques, etc. No Feature Friday means having 1 day (Friday mid Sprint) where engineers can work on whatever they want as long as they share the results with the team.

If you want to take part with a talk of your own in future, even a short one, please submit it here (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSewR0q9zrIrGUh8GTzPQj1iiUF1U1AOq4P07hWxvtYbG6esqg/viewform?c=0&w=1).

Note: Doors at Workday open at 6:15pm.

Thanks again to Workday for generously hosting us and to Kitman Labs for sponsoring the pizza!

And also thanks to JetBrains (http://www.jetbrains.com/) for the RubyMine IDE licence prizes.

Minimum age limit to attend is 18 years.
