What we’re about
Welcome to the Ruck Crew! We’re a local fitness and community group that meets bi-weekly for a 1-hour weighted ruck — a walk with a weighted backpack that builds strength, endurance, and resilience.
Rucking is simple, effective, and beginner-friendly. You don’t need fancy gear — just a backpack, some weight (water bottles, books, or a small sandbag), and comfortable walking shoes. We go at a steady pace for an hour, usually covering 3–4 miles, and adjust so both beginners and advanced members can enjoy the workout.
--Who’s it for?--
Complete beginners looking for a new way to get fit.
Runners and gym-goers who want to cross-train.
Veterans, first responders, and anyone who enjoys camaraderie and a sense of challenge.
Community members who want to meet new people in Fairfax/DMV area while staying active.
---How it works---
Our first meeting will start at Eakin Park (8601 Tobin Rd, Woodburn, VA 22003)
Quick intro for everyone, warm-up stretch, then a one-hour ruck.
Optional gatorade/water or social time afterward to build community.
---Beginner Tips---
Start with 10–20 lbs in your pack.
Use sturdy shoes and bring water.
Stand tall, walk naturally, and increase weight gradually over time.
The highest speed standard is 15min per mile, so attempt a brisk walk where you can keep a conversation but still breathing heavy. Shooting for HR zone 2.
I’ll be available to give advice on rucking technique, gear setup, and injury prevention, so you can get stronger without setbacks.
---About the Organizer---
Hi, I’m Paul Thompson, a former U.S. Army Special Forces officer and now an executive at a veteran-owned security and technology company. I’ve spent decades training with rucks and know the physical and mental benefits firsthand - as well as potential for injury if done poorly. I enjoy teaching proper form and giving practical training tips, so if you’re new to this, I’ll help you get started safely. This group is about fitness, resilience, and community — no drill sergeant vibes!!! Just encouragement and steady progress.
---Join Us---
Come out, challenge yourself, and connect with others in the area. All fitness levels welcome. Bring a backpack, a little weight, and a good attitude — the rest we’ll figure out together!
