What we’re about
Rudo here. I've been organizing meetups for years in Toronto and Japan. At this meetup we hold language exchanges, board game meetups, parties etc. We have events at least once a week.
You don't need to be good at Japanese to join, but you need to be actively studying and/or putting in an effort to learn. This makes the experience better for everyone.
Let's learn each other's languages, make friends and have fun! Yoroshiku!
* This group is limited to 20s and 30s since almost all of the students coming from Japan to study English are in this age group.
* Due to past problems, I ask all prospective members to please use your name and a body/face shot as your profile picture in order to have a higher chance to be accepted into the group. Thanks for your understanding.

1. What is this event?
勉強会 (benkyoukai, or study session) is an event where we gather together, Japanese and English speakers, and learn each other’s language. There are other similar events (like language exchange), but we go a step further and prepare topics.
2. Who can join? How many people can join? (Max ~10 per side)
a. In general, Japanese who are learning English and English speakers who want to learn Japanese. English speakers must have a minimum of being able to read hiragana and katakana. This doesn’t mean you have to be good at Japanese, but that at least you put some effort into it. This benefits everyone.
b. Waitlist. (Why is there a waitlist? Can I still join?)
Every week I try to keep a good balance of English speakers and Japanese speakers. (Though sometimes we have more Japanese speakers, but sometimes more English speakers). Join the waitlist, and if there’s a spot I’ll move you to ‘Going’. Maximum is around ~10 people per side (so 10 Japanese, 10 English speakers). Please be aware sometimes there's more demand then capacity and I can't put in everyone. If you aren't able to be put in, I will give you priority for the next event.
c. Participation Fee.
Normal: $3 each time. I take cash or e-transfer. There is also a monthly membership option for discounts. More details here: https://ruuudo.com/monthly/
3. What’s the agenda?
Usually it goes like this:
6:25pm - Sign In & Grouping
6:30pm ~ 7:10pm - English/Japanese time (as much as you can!)
7:10pm ~ Change groups (rotation)
7:10pm ~ 7:50pm - English/Japanese time (opposite language)
7:50pm - Free Time. Event is finished but you can stay with your group, join another group, have dinner together etc.
Since we’re at McD’s, you’re free to grab food or drink anytime.
4. Rules
a. Behaviour / Conduct
My priority is making a fun and safe environment for all. So I expect everyone joining to be excellent to each other. Don’t be a jerk, don’t make others uncomfortable.
b. Exchanging Contact Info
I don’t forbid exchanging contact information. After all, we’re here to learn and make friends! However, please be aware of the differences in cultures when it comes to communication and respecting boundaries.
c. Last Minute Cancellations / No-Shows
If you're on 'Going' or the Waitlist that means you're intending to come. Don’t cancel at the last minute please, especially no-shows! If I’m trying to balance Japanese and English speakers, it makes things difficult. Of course things can come up. If you really can’t make it on the day of, please change your RSVP and let me know via comment or DM. Thanks!

1. このイベントはなんですか？
ルドのグループの中で「勉強会」とは、日本人とカナダ人が集まってお互いに言語を学ぶイベントです。似たようなイベント（ランゲージエクスチェンジ）はありますが、こちらで学習向けのトピック（盛り上げる話も、勉強できることも）用意しています。2. 誰が参加できる？何人が入れる？（合計20~24人まで）
a. 英語勉強中の日本人と日本語勉強中のイングリッシュスピーカー（カナダ人）が参加できます。イングリッシュスピーカーは大体真面目な人で、ひらがなとカタカナを読めるレベルから参加させています。b. 何でキャンセル待ちリスト(Waitlist)に入ってるの？参加できる？
日本人とカナダ人の良い比率を作るために、キャンセル待ちリストを使っています。まずはキャンセル待ちに入ってから、オーガナイザーがあなたを’Going’に移動します。
日本人とイングリッシュスピーカーはそれぞれ、約10人まで参加できます。c. 参加費について
一般: $3（今月は$2）

McDonaldのお店に入ってから主催者（ルド）に話しかけてください。大体日本語の帽子をかぶっている男性です。そしたらオーガナイザーがテーブルに案内します。紙とペンと話のトピックを用意しています。グループの席で、軽い話からスタートします！基本的にこのスケジュールで進みます：
6:25pm - サインイン・グループに別れる
6:30pm ~ 7:10pm – グループ1（英語20分/日本語20分）
7:10pm - 休憩＆グループメンバーの入れ替わり
7:10pm ~ 7:50pm – グループ2（英語20分/日本語20分）
7:50pm~ Free Time - イベント終了その後は自由行動になります。そのまま帰ってもいいし、皆でごはん食べに行くこともあります。
4. ルール
a. 行動
楽しい、安全な環境を作るのが第一です。なので、参加する皆さん、お互いに良い行動をしましょう。他人にいやな気持ちにさせることはやめましょう。何か問題があったら、オーガナイザーに伝えてください。b. 連絡情報の交換
友達を作りたいという気持ちから、連絡先を交換するのは禁止ではありません。ですが、お互いに異文化のコミュニケーションスタイルと人間関係の違いを考えましょう。c.ドタキャン
できるだけしないでください！良い比率（日本人とカナダ人）を作るのに困ります。キャンセル待ちリストで待っている人にとっても良くないです。予定を変更せざるを得ない場合は、できるだけ早く教えてください。
