Seattle Half/Full Marathons plus Winter 2 mile Grand Prix recaps

From: Richard F.
Sent on: Thursday, December 8, 2011 7:22 PM

Quick recap on the Seattle ½ and Full Marathon as well as race #1 in the Winter 2 mile Grand Prix.

It was not a bad weather day for the ½ marathoners, but the wind and rain arrived with gusto for the marathoners.  With the 45 minute later start, along with more time on the course, things were a bit less enjoyable for the 26.2ers.  From those that I saw on race day, or heard reports from/of, it was a rewarding day.  A few observations:

***John mentioned he had a chance to see Andy at the finish and chat for a bit.  I’m guessing Andy PRed and John ran a PR despite not having a solid day.

***Edward ran his first ½ marathon, at 51 years old, and broke the RS4L 50-59 age record with a very solid 1:40:15. (bested Rick Loan’s 1:41:01 ran on the same course two years ago!).

***Aimie helped Edward through the hills as she continues to run PR’s at the ½ marathon distance.  Less than 2 years ago her PR was 1:58.  On this day she bested her previous best from six months ago by a bit over 2 minutes, running 1:40:30.

***It was nice to see Irina about ½ mile from the finish on PR pace.  (thankfully my watch was semi-accurate when I told her she was on PR pace!)  This was her first time to dip under 1:50 with a 1:48:48 clocking.

***It was a nice surprise to see Eileen Burns, who I was lucky enough to coach at Nathan Hale over 10 years ago, not far behind Irina and staying in shape post doctorate at the UW this summer.

***Gretchen and Jen were back of the packers in the start corral and spent a lot of the early stages getting to the start line and trying to get moving.  Since Gretchen was using this as a training run and Jen had a recent hip pain they used this as an opportunity to run really easy for the first 5K and then Jen decided the hip was good to try to start passing a bit more aggressively and came out unscathed in 1:50:40 looking very relaxed.  Gretchen wasn’t quite so aggressive in making passes and ran very comfortably and was back to some good training the next day!

***I was certain that I saw Malinee entering Memorial Stadium at just over 2 hours.  Was surprised when I saw Chalida at 2:07:33 (a slight PR from R&R a year and a half ago) in the results and Malinee at 2:30 something.  Would be good to hear the story from either of you!

***Stevie ran with a friend running his second ½ marathon that was trying to best his previous time of just under 2 hours.  Looks like his friend ran out of steam and Stevie would not carry him in as they crossed in 2:04:25.  I do know they went on an 11 mile run at 9 min. pace about a week before the race.  Don’t leave your best performance on the practice field kiddies!

***Cate and Jeff H. complete their first ever ½ marathons.  A bit nicer than the full Jeff?  Looks like you ran a nice even race.  Looks like you may have really enjoyed it.  I hope you did Cate.

***Brian and Tara completed their least favorite of five marathons.  They don’t even plan on doing another for months!!!!! Maree, I’m guessing you had a comp entry because of your working with the Marathon Association and that meant you didn’t wear a bib.   ????   How did your run go?  Was it as much of a struggle as you anticipated?

The New Balance/Super Jock and Jill Winter 2 Mile Grand Prix got off to a blazing (not temperature-wise!) start this past Saturday on the series cross country course at Magnuson Park.  Course turned out to be just about 2 slippery, hilly, grassy miles.  As always, it’s tough to convert times to something sensible, but most all performed as hoped and expected.  Very conservative first halves with some hard efforts over the last halves of the course.

Last years 70 and over series winner, Richard Zerbe, may have had the best performance of many as he ran more than 45 seconds faster than the first race last year!

Look for most of these hard workers, and a few additional,  to blaze to new 2 mile track PR’s come February.  Wednesday nights interval session was another great step in that direction!

A job well done!
