Maria Gullickson & Robert Fehrmann: Hadoop + Recommendation Engine

About the talk:

Maria Gullickson and Robert Fehrmann will co-present on some of SnagAJob's tools for job recommendation and click-stream processing.

Part 1: The Affiliated Posting Engine (APE) is a system built at Snagajob to determine which postings are similar to each other based on having applicants in common. "Job seekers who applied to this job posting also applied to these other job postings." It has proven to be a useful tool to show job seekers postings they are more likely to apply to. Maria is going to present how APE works, how it is being used, and what is planned for it's future.

Part 2: Web clickstream data can provide extremely powerful insight into user behavior and preferences. However, traditional data management tools and strategies frequently aren't scalable enough to manage these massive amounts of data. Robert will talk is about how snagajob utilizes several open source projects within the hadoop ecosystem to collect and manage clickstream data.

About Maria:

Maria Gullickson has Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Computer Science and has been working as a software developer since 2000. She is currently a Senior Software Engineer with Snagajob. Maria is a member of Snagajob's Data Insight team, where she helps find ways to expose and make use of all the data Snagajob has on job postings and job seekers.

About Robert:

Robert Fehrmann is a 20 year veteran in data management. He received his master’s degree in computer science from "Technische Universitaet Braunschweig" in Germany. Robert is a member of the snagajob engineering team, helping snagajob to implement a polyglot platform utilizing best of breed tools for data management.
