Day Hike (1B) Clementine Trail CleanUp and Hike (Placer Group)
Details
Join the Sierra Club Placer Group on Saturday, April 18, for a hike while picking up trash in recognition of Earth Day in the Auburn State Recreation Area. We'll be participating in State Parks' American River Clean-Up event and joining Canon Keepers naturalists on an out and back hike on Clementine Trail to Lake Clementine. We'll be picking up trash as we go and learning about the varied bridge crossing history of the North Fork and canyon wildflower identification. This 4.4-mile hike is suitable for those new to hiking. The pace of the hike will be on the slower side of moderate along varied terrain, including gravel, dirt, rocks, and poison oak along the sides of the trail. We will hike above a section of the North Fork of the American River and pass under the Foresthill Bridge, arriving at the Lake Clementine Dam (our turnaround point) for a short snack break. Wildlife sightings are possible. The trail has some exposure with limited shade in spots, so sunscreen is recommended. We estimate it will take approximately 3 hours at a moderate pace. [Optional: lunch for cleanup volunteers is being provided by Auburn Alehouse Team from noon to 1pm.] More than a light rain cancels. Hike stats: 4.4 miles, elevation gain 682 feet from a base elevation of approximately 584 feet.
Bring: Sturdy Boots or hiking shoes, gloves, a trash bag & a trash grabber if you have one. Bring the essentials, including water, snacks, sunscreen, and layers for changeable temperatures. Also $$ for carpool. (Note: Recommended carpool reimbursement rate is up to $7.00 per hour per carpool participant, or whatever you and your driver agree to.)
Sierra Club Medical/Waiver Forms: Fill out and bring this emergency medical form: [https://tinyurl.com/ycy985mt](https://tinyurl.com/ycy985mt). Leader will check to make sure you have a completed form, then you'll carry it with you in your pack. Each participant will also be required to sign the Sierra
Club Sign-In & Waiver Form. Everyone will also need to separately register at 8 a.m. for the Auburn State Park Recreation Area event and attend a safety talk at the Confluence.
The hike is limited to 30 participants. Leaders: Kathy Verrue-Slater and Aileen Allison-Zarea. Please communicate via the MeetUp app with any questions.
Carpooling - Meet at 6:45 AM at Taylor Road Park-n-Ride (adjacent to Golfland-Sunsplash). Vehicles will depart by 7:00 a.m.
Trailhead/Confluence: For those driving to the trailhead, meet at approximately 7:45 AM at the Auburn State Park Kiosk off of Old Foresthill Road (before the Clementine trailhead) to sign in for Sierra Club hike. We'll then join State Parks staff at the confluence to register for the clean-up event and listen to a safety talk. Hike will start around 8:30 am.
