Day Hike (1A) Cascade Canal Trail (Placer Group)

Join the Sierra Club Placer Group on Sunday, May 3, 2026, for a Day Hike at Cascade Canal Trail, near Nevada City. NOTE: Since posting on Meetup, we have modified the distance to be 5-6 miles out and back. This trail is relatively flat and meanders through Douglas Firs and Dogwoods and follows a canal for its entire length. Viewpoints along the way include one where we can see downtown Nevada City. This multi-use trail is popular for hiking, mountain biking, trail running, and horseback riding. Well-behaved dogs on leash and under control at all times are OK. We estimate the hike will take 2.5 to 3 hours at a moderate pace. Hike stats: Approximately 5-6 miles, elevation gain 610 ft. Note: There are no restrooms available at the trailhead or anywhere along the trail, so please plan accordingly. Optional lunch at a local restaurant after the hike.

Bring: Sturdy hiking boots, sunscreen, and insect repellent are recommended. Bring the essentials, including water, snacks/lunch, and layers for changeable temperatures. All participants will be required to sign the Sierra Club Sign-In & Waiver Form at the Trailhead or meetup location. Leaders: Aileen Allison-Zarea, Kathy Verrue-Slater, and Trish Kness.

Carpooling: Meet at 7:30 AM at Taylor Road Park-n-Ride (adjacent to Golfland-Sunsplash, at the far end near In-N-Out). Vehicles will depart by 7:45 a.m. Note: Carpools are arranged by attendees. Recommended reimbursement rate for drivers is up to $7.00 per hour per carpool participant.

Trailhead: Free parking is available in the trailhead parking lot off Gracie Road but is limited, hence the early start. For those meeting at the trailhead, plan to meet at 8:50 AM. Follow the AllTrails directions via the link below to the trailhead.
