The Spotify API for (Practical) Fun
Details
Plex (https://www.plex.tv/) is a great way to listen to music, but there are better ways to share it. Also, Plex does not work if a server loses internet access! That’s why Dr. Tanim (https://www.linkedin.com/in/tanimislam/) sought a way to create and regularly update Plex music playlists to public Spotify playlists (ex: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3gcfjsp49aujEVV31d2gh9?si=0139831302e74c90) in order to share musical taste, on rare occasions, still play music in the car when offline!
In this Meetup, Dr. Tanim will show you some of how it was implemented, all using Python, to interface to Spotify’s RESTful API:
* https://engineering.atspotify.com/2015/03/understanding-spotify-web-api/
* How to set up Spotify API authentication.
* Show the Spotify playlists that mirror Plex music playlists.
* A demonstration where a public Spotify music playlist is created and stored.
* Some Python methods developed to stitch together the process by which Spotify playlists are created and updated to mirror a Plex music playlist.
* Description of the two Python methods: the Spotify no-authentication API to search for songs and the Spotify with authentication API to create and modify playlists.
* How to Pythonically access Plex music playlists. https://python-plexapi.readthedocs.io/en/latest/modules/playlist.html
* Design and implementation choices that make playlist creation and access easier and more robust.
If there's time, let's discuss as yet unimplemented ideas on porting other kinds of music playlists to Spotify.
Thanks to the internet and the creativity of all involved parties, this monthly forum for learning and discourse is whatever we choose to make it. Let's get Pythonic about it, shall we? Sponsors welcome.
