Advertising and the Art of the Sacred Feminine

Details

Join us at the University of Arizona Museum of Art, where we'll be discussing part of the LOVERULES exhibit, featuring the art of Hank Willis Thomas.

LOVERULES is one of the more powerful art exhibits I've seen in a while. I left wanting to talk about it and share the experience with other women. If you attend this event, you'll understand why!

The portion of LOVERULES we'll be discussing is the artist's 2015 series Unbranded: A Century of White Women 1915-2015. In it, Willis Thomas chose one print advertising image from each year from 1915-2015. He then stripped the image of its text, heightening our awareness of how we read the images as assertions about beauty, desire, virtue, and ideal white femininity. 38 of the images from this Unbranded series are included in the UAMA exhibit and our discussion will take place in the gallery where all of them are hung.

After our discussion, feel free to explore the rest of LOVERULES and the works in the museum – especially,Woman Ochre, the storied Willem de Kooning painting that was recently returned to UAMA after it's highly anticipated restoration.

This event is free, but there is a $6 museum admission fee (discounted for our group, from $8). Also, the closest parking garage is the UA Park Ave. Garage on Speedway, which is $2 per hour, maximum $8 per day.

AGENDA

Please arrive at the museum by 1:50PM so there is time to pay the museum entry fee of $6 (group discount) and assemble in the gallery. It's a 5-7 minute walk to the museum, from the garage. Please plan accordingly.
