In this illuminating talk, esteemed author, scholar, and longtime translator for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Thupten Jinpa, Ph.D., traces the arc of the Buddha’s journey—from the comforts of palace life, through the trials of renunciation, to the ultimate realization of enlightenment. The Buddha’s life emerges as a powerful model for inner transformation, offering timeless guidance in cultivating awareness, wisdom, and compassion. Jinpa’s reflections will provide spiritual context for these places and illuminate how the Buddha’s path can inform and inspire our own. A Q&A with Jinpa will follow the talk. The event is a fundraiser for the monks of Gaden Shartse Dokhang Khangtsen.
Dr. Thupten Jinpa is a Tibetan Buddhist scholar, former monk, and has received he Geshe Lharam degree, as well as a PhD in religious studies from Cambridge University. He has been the principal English translator to the Dalai Lama since 1985. A professor at McGill University, he has translated and edited more than ten books by the Dalai Lama and many of his own. He established the Institute of Tibetan Classics, where as president and editor-in-chief, he is helping preserve Tibet’s rich intellectual, spiritual, and artistic heritage through the translation of many of its seminal texts. He is also an active board member of the Mind and Life Institute, the Founder and Chairman of Compassion Institute, and is a visiting research scholar at the Stanford Institute for Neuro-Innovation and Translational Neurosciences at Stanford University.
This talk serves as an introduction to In the Footsteps of the Buddha: A Virtual Pilgrimage, a five-part course led by Khensur Rinpoche Thupten Tenzin, which brings to life the sacred sites where the Buddha walked, taught, and awakened. Jinpa’s reflections will provide spiritual context for these places and illuminate how the Buddha’s path can inform and inspire our own.
