Learn how PennDOT, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), Carnegie Mellon University, RIDC and Westmoreland County are partnering to advance [PennSTART ](https://ridc.org/autonomy/pennstart/)– a state-of-the-art safety, training, and research facility at RIDC Westmoreland Innovation Center.

Representatives will share PennSTART’s vision and how it will impact the future of transportation safety—in addition to how it will promote innovation and attract companies, jobs, and investments to the region.

PennSTART is still in the discovery stage of building this state-of-the-art facility. Come ready to engage. The team wants input on track design, planning and more from emergency responders; transportation technology companies, vendors, contractors, suppliers, and consultants; federal, state, and local government agencies; DOT representatives; and academics.

**Tim White** is the Chair of PennSTART Operating Committee. He joined the RIDC team in January 2011 and currently serves as the Senior VP of Business Development and Strategy. Tim worked in the joint office of economic development for CMU in Pittsburgh, becoming the first coordinator for the Greater Oakland Keystone Innovation Zone. He holds a B.A. in Economics and International Studies from West Virginia University and a Master’s in Public Policy and Management from Carnegie Mellon’s H.J. Heinz School of Public Policy and Management. As a Stephen Lauble Community Fellow at Heinz College, Tim assisted the Allegheny County’s Department of Economic Development in business development and policy analysis. 

**Stan Caldwell** is the Executive Director, Carnegie Mellon University Traffic21 Institute and Mobility21, a USDOT National University Transportation Center for Mobility. He started the highly acclaimed Traffic21 blog. In 2014, Stan was appointed Adjunct Associate Professor of Transportation and Public Policy at CMU, where he teaches ITS courses and advises student projects. Additionally, Stan serves as the Director of State Relations for CMU’s office of Government Affairs. Before joining CMU, Stan served as the Executive Director to U.S. Senator Arlen Specter’s Pittsburgh Office, in addition to serving for many other Pennsylvania elected officials. Stan received his Master of Public Policy and Management degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

**Mark Kopko** is the Director of PennDOT’s Office of Transformational Technology. He manages all activities related to emerging technology including the deployment of connected infrastructure, development of policies and standards, and the authorization of automated vehicle testers, platooning operations, personal delivery devices and automated work zone vehicles. Mark leads the deployment of the PennSTART, oversees smart city initiatives, manages multiple university-led initiatives, and supports activities related to UAS, hyperloop, broadband, mileage based user fees, and electric vehicles.
