Abstract:
In this session, AI pioneer and Waabi CEO, Raquel Urtasun, will discuss Waabi's "AI-first" approach to accelerating autonomy development for autonomous trucking. She will provide an overview of Waabi World, their scalable, high fidelity closed-loop simulator and the key to rapidly and safely commercializing self-driving technology.

The self-driving industry has made meaningful progress, but commercial deployment is still limited to very simple and small operational domains. Scaling remains costly and technically challenging, especially when it comes to solving for less frequent and more unpredictable driving scenarios.

Waabi is tackling self-driving in a new way. Their "AI-first" approach leverages deep learning, probabilistic inference and complex optimization to create software that is end-to-end trainable, interpretable and capable of very sophisticated reasoning. This, together with a revolutionary closed loop simulator that has an unprecedented level of fidelity, enables testing at scale of both common driving scenarios and safety-critical edge cases. This approach significantly reduces the need to drive testing miles in the real world and results in a safe, affordable solution that is eminently ready for deployment.

Speakers info:
Raquel Urtasun is the Founder and CEO of Waabi. She is a Full Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto and a co-founder of the Vector Institute for AI. From 2017 to 2021 she was the Chief Scientist and Head of R&D at Uber ATG. From 2015-2017 she was a Canada Research Chair in Machine Learning and Computer Vision (from which she resigned to join Uber).
