Morning Discussion: Errors of Reaction

When we have once adopted an opinion, our pride makes us loth to admit that we are wrong. When objections are made to our views, we are more concerned with discovering how to combat them than how much truth or sound sense there may be in them.

These are the ideas shared in an essay written by Rowland Jepson on thinking. To face new facts can essentially be very painful. Most of us like to think of ourselves as intelligent, knowledgeable, observant, wise... accepting our mistakes is no easy task. Of course, it's not our fault. Or is it?

In this meetup, we will discuss the errors of reaction, specifically on the following: automatic rejection, changing the subject, shifting the burden of proof, straw man, and attacking the critic. We will share from personal experiences and also from a few case studies.

Some questions we will explore:

• What is an error of reaction?
• Why do we make these errors? Can we eliminate them?
• Why do we have an urge to save face and preserve our image?
• What are the dangers of these reactions? (to us, or from us)

Our session will have a moderator but will remain rather casual and friendly for both newcomers and those passionate about critical thinking. Start your morning with engaging questions, meet new friends, and most fun of all... challenge your knowledge.
