Blessing of the Fleet
Details
The Blessing of the Fleet, a historical ceremony dating back to the city's earliest days of Spanish colonial occupation, happens annually on Palm Sunday. The Diocese of St. Augustine's bishop blesses vessels in a historic local tradition. Each vessel is encouraged to decorate with flags and bunting as well. If you have any flags or bunting and you would like to decorate the boat, please come early. The 34-foot sailboat "Breezy Girl" leaves the dock at 11:00. Please call 443-691-9587 when you arrive to be escorted to the marina or if you are running a little late. No phone contact before 11:00 will be considered a no show. We will motor down the San Sabastian River to the 312 Bridge where we will follow the parade of boats north to the Bridge of Lions, and circle to pass by the Municipal Marina. The priest and royal family will be on the dock, as each boat receives the priest's blessing. We may hoist sails for the trip back depending on boat traffic and the weather. Bring any snacks you may want to share. I have plenty of drinking water, a refrigerator and there is a bathroom aboard.
