Field trip to Mountain Meadows Massacre site and memorial

Let's go on an afternoon field trip to view and learn about the Mountain Meadows Massacre, which occurred in 1857. This is now a national historical landmark off Utah 18, about 10 or 12 miles above Veyo, Utah. This was a tragic and bloody encounter between Mormons who had recently settled in this area and pioneers bound for California, with the involvement of some local Native Americans. There is a beautiful memorial now and a trail that winds up the hill to view the massacre area and the camp. There are four stops in total. Each involves a short walk but nothing strenuous. There are numerous informative plaques along the trails. Dress warmly as the memorial is at 5000 ft. elevation.

We will meet at Fishrock Grill parking lot and carpool to the site. It will take about 30 minutes to get there. Anyone who prefers not to carpool may drive alone, as well. At the request of one of our members, we will make a stop at "world famous" Veyo Pies on the way up. Afterwards, we will head back to Fishrock Grill, where we can enjoy a libation at the country club or food/appetizers or both and share our impressions and thoughts on the sites.

In the event of inclement weather (such as snow), I will reschedule to a later date. It's relatively unlikely, but it could be bad weather at that elevation. I have been there several times in colder weather, and it was fine.

I should add that the field trip itself will take a couple of hours, plus the apres-trip gathering at the Fishrock Grill, which could take at least an hour. If you can't make the Fishrock Grill part, that's ok, but please let me know in advance so I can make reservations for the correct number of people.
