Dramatic Music Program from the Chamber Project of St. Louis
The Brits are coming, and they're bringing plenty of drama, romance, and a little rebellion! Arnold Bax kicks things off with his beautiful Elegiac Trio, written for viola, flute, and harp, and inspired by his deep love of Ireland. American composer Samuel Barber sneaks into our British lineup with Dover Beach, a hauntingly beautiful setting of a poem by Englishman Matthew Arnold, performed by Benedetta Orsi with a string quartet. Then there's Dame Ethel Smyth, a fearless suffragist, rule-breaker, and all-around force of nature, whose La Danse gives us another reason to celebrate this remarkable composer. This piece has a big group with voice, flute, harp, percussion, and strings! After intermission, where you can grab yourself a pint, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's gorgeous Clarinet Quintet takes center stage. Written when he was just 19, this ambitious work proved that the young composer was already a musical powerhouse! From Irish inspiration to English poetry, rebellious women, and youthful genius, this concert has a little bit of everything!

Dinner after the Concert
