Sailing on Bde Maka Ska & Drinks/Food at Pimento Market

Details

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT A GOOD EVENT FOR PEOPLE WITH MOBILITY CHALLENGES.

Sailing 3:00 to 5:00 PM and drinks/food at the Pimento Market afterward.

Sailing is a lot of fun and a great hobby which I love to share with others. I am a member of the Minneapolis Sailing Center and approved to sail their keelboats in winds up to 20 Knots. These are 18-foot boats with a large seating area above the water line, similar to those in the event picture.

I am not a sailing instructor. However, I can give directions in the operation of the boat and tell you what I know. This social event does not qualify as a sailing lesson. Please, never characterize this social event as a lesson or me as in instructor. Therefore, if at the time of the event, the weather conditions and/or the participants’ physical condition/abilities, in my judgment, seem to be such that they will result in an unsafe or negative experience, I may cancel the event as we are preparing to go out to the boat.

Anyone choosing to participate does not need to have sailing experience, but will need to assist in the operation of the boat and meet minimal physical requirements of strength, a high level of manual dexterity, hearing, sight, agility, ability to respond quickly to directions and environment, etc. to include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Successfully transfer from the dock to a small transport boat, between the transport boat and the sailboat.
  • Lay on your stomach on the front of the boat and manage ropes & clips to release and attach to the mooring buoy quickly, as directed.
  • Lift the boom (which is heavy) and clip it onto a hanging clip.
  • Respond quickly to directions, performing actions and reacting quickly to environmental conditions and their effect on the boat.
  • Assist, as directed, quickly rigging and derigging the boat (i.e., Setting up ropes, hoisting and dropping the sails, etc.)
  • Manage (release and pull in) the ropes that control the front sail, as directed.
  • Adjust other rigging, as directed.
  • Stay balanced as the boat moves about.
  • Perform most tasks from seated positions or laying down.
  • Follow directions and complete tasks accurately and quickly.
  • Please note: This event may NOT include steering the boat or controlling the main sail.

Please note that, like all Meet-Up Events and Activities, members participate in these functions willingly and at their own risk. There are inherent and unpredictable risks to this event and all functions, tasks, roles, actions, etc. in which you chose to participate. The Group and/or event organizer does not accept any liability for anyone who so chooses to participate. Sailing is a dynamic activity that is a great deal of fun, but accidents can result in injury, disfigurement or death. If an individual is not willing to waive liability for the Group or event organizer they should choose not to participate.

What to bring:
Required:
· Sneakers, boat shoes or other “grabby”, toed shoes. Dress shoes, heels and a lot of sandals will not work.
· Wearing a life jacket at all times is required. Bring your own life jacket if you have one. MSC has life jackets you can use, but there is no guarantee you will like it or it will be as comfortable as your own.

Recommended

  • Brimmed hat for best sun protection.
  • Sunscreen
  • Bottle of water. Snacks are fine too, but please keep containers small. Preferably, everything in one backpack.
  • Gloves to help with pulling ropes
  • Something to hold your valuables. There is storage space for backpacks, etc.

PARKING: You will need to park on city streets, and it is usually pretty crowded, so you may end up parking 4 or 5 blocks away.
