First Lighthaven Sequences Reading Group - MSP Edition

Details

Join us for the first-ever MSP Sequences Reading Group! We’ll be gathering at The Market at Malcolm Yards, a unique venue housed in the historic Harris Machinery Building. This space, rich with history and fire pits, offers nine diverse food vendors and a self-pour tap wall.

The MSP Sequences Reading Group is designed to sync with the new Lighthaven Sequences Reading Group starting the same day at Berkeley, following the same reading schedule to ensure that participants are aligned with the broader community. Whether you’re new to the Sequences or a seasoned reader, you’ll find this group an excellent opportunity to delve into key concepts in rationalist philosophy while engaging with others who share your interests.

What’s the Reading?
For this Sept 5th meetup, we're reading from the first book of the sequences highlights. The mandatory readings are

  1. The Lens That Sees Its Flaws
  2. Your Strength as a Rationalist
  3. What do we mean by rationality?
  4. Twelve Virtues of Rationality
  5. Optional bonus: Use the Try Harder, Luke

We’d be thrilled to have you join us, even if you haven’t had a chance to read the essays from the Sequences beforehand. You’re absolutely welcome! However, to keep things interesting, we might ask you to accept a small, playful “punishment” for coming unprepared. And yes, you’ll still need to catch up on the readings during the meetup.
As you explore the essays, I encourage you to reflect deeply on the following:

  • What resonates as the most profound or essential point in the essay? Why do you think it holds such importance?
  • Is there anything in the essay that feels unsettled or off to you? What might the essay be overlooking or getting wrong?
  • How might the insights from this essay intersect with your own life? In what ways could these ideas challenge or transform your perspective?

Who Should Attend:
Anyone with an interest in rationality, philosophy, or simply the pleasure of good conversation is welcome. Whether you’re new to these ideas or have been exploring them for years, you’ll find a warm and welcoming community here.
