Sunday 12 April Barrow Bridge 7 Mile Walk
Details
Barrow Bridge walk, 6.7miles, 1089 feet ascent, Grade D. Meet at 9.50 for 10am departure
This Sunday's shorter walk starts from the Barrow Bridge model village (see picture). Although it's just over 1000 feet of ascent, it's a long gradual incline rather than undulating with short steep sections. There might be some sections of mud, so please come prepared with suitable walking boots/shoes, and poles could be useful if you have them. There are no public toilets at the start nor during the walk.
The route takes a gradual ascent to the mast on Winter Hill at the highest point, then descends to the cairn at Two Lads, with excellent views over to Rivington Pike, and across the Lancashire plane to the coast, before descending back down to the starting point.
After the walk, refreshments at Bob's Smithy Inn, Chorley Old Road, BL1 7PX.
Meet at 9.50 for car sharing from Brooklands. If you plan to go direct to the start, please let me know in advance so we don't leave without you. The route to the start point is as follows:
Leave the M60 at Junction 15 to join the M61. Then follow signs for Bolton A666.
At the traffic lights in Bolton stay in the middle lane and continue straight on, following the signs for the A666.
After a short distance take a left turn at a set of traffic lights, following the brown sign for Smithills. This is the A6099 Halliwell Road. You will see a mosque approx. 200 yards from these lights on the right hand side. Stay on this road for a few minutes until you see a sign for Wigan A58 approaching at a set of lights. Take this left turn and follow this road until you come to a set of lights where you see a right hand turn for Barrow Bridge, Moss Bank Park. This road becomes Moss Lane which you continue along past the park on your left, past the chimney, and follow signs for the village. The name of the road changes to Barrow Bridge Road further on. Continue down a narrow street until you see the Barrow Bridge car park on your left. The car park is free.
