Sun May 31 Dovestones 7 Mile Walk
Details
Hi everyone
This Sunday's shorter walk is 7 miles, starting near the village of Greenfield. As parking is quite difficult at the 2 car parks in the area, we will start nearby on Hollins Lane (as last time in 2024), where there should be plenty of parking on the right hand side of the road about 150 meters in as you enter from the A635, Holmfirth Road. There aren't any toilets there, but toilets are available 2 miles/55 minutes into the walk.
The walk has excellent views of the hills and reservoirs surrounding the Dovestones area. The walk is D grade, quite hilly, with a total climb of 1300 feet over the duration of the walk. There are 3 main ascents during the walk, each one around 300 feet, with the first ascent very early on in the walk. These ascents are fairly steep, but in between the paths are undulating and often fairly flat. The paths could be muddy if there is extensive rain between now and Sunday, although might be okay after the recent hot/dry spell. Poles may come in useful for the undulating terrain anyway even if not muddy for those who have problems with balance/knee issues. There are also a number of stiles on the route. Good quality walking shoes are essential.
We will be meeting at the car park at Brooklands at 9.45am for car sharing and a prompt departure no later than 10.00am. For those wishing to go directly to the start point, we will be meeting on Hollins Lane, Greenfield, OL3 7NR, at 10.45am and start soon after. Please advise via email if you plan to go straight to the start so we know to expect you.
If you wish to bring a dog it must be kept on a short lead as the paths can be quite narrow in places.

Directions from Sale are below:
Take the M60 from Sale towards Stockport, leaving at Junction 23 (Ashton-U-Lyne), and follow signs for A6140 (A635), left hand lane.
At the first lights, make sure you are in the right hand lane, turn right signed A635 Ashton-u-Lyne
You go through a number of junctions, staying on the A635 through Ashton. You will go past the Town Hall and Tameside College, both on your left. Stay on the A635, following signs for Stalybridge, continuing through Heyrod and Mossley until you come to a small roundabout in Greenfield with the Clarence pub on your left.
Keep straight on towards Holmfirth on the A635. Hollins Lane, our start point, is on the left about 1/3 mile from the roundabout. If you see a turning on your right for the car park at Dovestones reservoir, you have gone too far.
Refreshments: We will have 2 or 3 stops during the walk, so bring plenty of drinks/snacks for the walk, and after the walk at the Clarence pub nearby.
Look forward to seeing you on Sunday
