Milky Way at Mirror Lake (Saturday)

This meetup has been split up into two nights. Therefore, you might want to change your date depending on which date works best for you.

The dates are: Friday, August 2nd, 2019 and Saturday August 3rd, 2019

Saturday night’s meetup will be the more traditional Meetup where we will shoot at Pass Lake (The cover photo was taken there) and Moon Lake. If there is time we might try a third location. These locations will be close to the road or have excellent paths to the spots we will be shooting.

Friday Night’s shoot will likely be further from the highway and will likely have some hiking. So be aware of that. I do not know the locations yet as I will be scouting them during the day. Depending on the location, it might be a single spot if we have to hike a bit to get to the location.

On Saturday Night, Astronomical Twilight ends around 10:30 PM and the Moon will set about 10:45 PM. The core will already be up but the best viewing time be after the moon sets. We have until around 2:30 AM until the core drops below the horizon. Likely even less time with us up in the mountains and the mountains getting in the way. Expect about 3 hours of optimal shooting.

Therefore on Saturday, we will head out about 10:00 PM to get set up and answer any questions. Our first location is just a mile up the road from the parking lot. Those who plan on blending a foreground shot with their night sky shot, might want to shoot the foreground shot before the moon sets.

The Meetup says 9:45 PM as we will head to our first location at 10:00 PM. Which will be Pass Lake. A link to the location is below.

But I will be at the Mirror Lake Parking Lot around 9:00 PM to answer any questions people have before we head out. FYI, Sunset is around 8:37 PM so you might want to try and get some shots of Sunset before we meet up for the Milky Way.

I will be heading up Thursday afternoon and will be camping until Sunday. So if the weather turns, I will not be able to cancel the event because there is no service up there. Unless the weather is so bad it chases me home.
