David Deutsch and the Fabric of Reality
Details
For our next SLPC session, we will relax (relatively speaking) from the rigors of Quine with a visit to the interface of modern physics and philosophy, by way of David Deutsch's popular 1997 book, "The Fabric of Reality".
Deutsch is a theoretical physicist best known for his work on quantum computing and "constructor theory". In the present work, he argues ultimately for the existence of a multiverse, by combining the "many worlds" interpretation of quantum physics with the theories of computation, evolution and epistemology--what he calls the "four strands".
We won't be reading the whole thing--just hit the more philosophy-oriented chapters, 4 & 7 : "Criteria for Reality" and "A Conversation About Justification". (Chapter 14, "The Ends of the Universe", can be extra credit for you speed readers out there...)
