What we're about
Ilù Àiya is a Zürich-based samba reggae drumming group. New members are welcome - please CONTACT US. (Most of our organisation and members are not on Meetup.) Read more below...
WHAT DO WE PLAY?
Samba reggae is a style of samba originating in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. We are mostly playing traditional rhythms of famous Brazilian groups like Olodum and Ilê Aiyê, with whom we have close personal and musical links.
WHEN DO WE PLAY?
Weekly practices: THURSDAY evenings in Zurich-Wollishofen
Festivals and events: e.g. Caliente, Züri Fäscht, Zürich Marathon, private events
Workshops: organised periodically throughout the year with visiting maestros from Europe and Brazil
New members are welcome to join us on the first Thursday of every month. Please CONTACT US if you would like to join.
We welcome new drummers and experienced drummers alike. There are different instruments depending on your experience (if any). New players can immediately start to play the basic rhythms, and you will learn more and more over time.
After 3 rehearsals (free), we ask that you decide whether you would like to become a full member. This means a small membership fee, coming regularly to weekly rehearsals and buying your own ear plugs. If you stay with us long-term, we also recommend that every member has their own small equipment (sticks, belt, etc), but this is absolutely not necessary in the beginning.
We speak German, English, Portuguese, Spanish & more.
We are not-for-profit. Our membership fees go towards our costs (room rental, equipment).
