Autumn walk and salmon run in Campbell
Campbell Park, East Campbell Avenue, Campbell, CA, USYes, this is really a wild salmon run happening right now in the creeks of the South Bay. I walked along the trail recently and you have a chance to see Chinook salmon 3 feet long or more from the trail. This year in particular has seen an explosion in the native salmon population returning to spawn. The season and chance to see the salmon is short (they arrive around Thanksgiving, and are gone by January).
"It's the largest metropolitan service area with salmon, native salmon running up through it", according to Dr. Rick Lanman, president of the Institute for Historical Ecology.
The plan will be to meet in Campbell park at 10:45 at the bulletin board/wooden kiosk (next to the pedestrian bridge) and walk northbound along the Los Gatos Creek trail. The trail is a paved pedestrian/bike trail that parallels Los Gatos Creek with very scenic foliage this time of year. There are a number of spots between the park and Hamilton Ave where we have a chance to see the salmon. We can walk as far as we like but I don't plan to walk more than 2 miles (about one hour of walking is my guess).
Afterwards we can walk to downtown Campbell for lunch.
