Re: [atheists-518] Debates

I'm totally in. It just depends on where the meetups are.

This is what my Facebook becomes half the time lately anyways. I'd like to get it back to being a place for my friends and fiction writing fans, rather than a sounding board for fundies (even if we did go to the same bible college).

Hello SDNAA members. I've been made an Event Organizer so I can reach all of you at once. If I've not personally contacted you about forming a debate team, then this is my official welcome to a future meet up I plan to have regarding this. I don't know about you, but I think that outdated superstitious belief systems have been holding back humanities progress in areas such as science, education, and culture. Governments have used it for politics. Religious institutions have used it for control. The wise have no use for it. The ignorant have been subjucated by it. Wars are fought, using it as a cloak, for what they're really fighting over. So this is a very complex problem with a deep history of it's own. Many people such as our group have broken free of it. However, there are many others who have not. Many who are indoctrinated and simply can't see it any other way. Some are pressured by peers and fear being ostricized by those closest to them. Also there are the cultural identities with which people pride themselves on being. They then teach their children this, passing along these beliefs. Here we are in a very enlightened era and these belief systems persist. Dawkins thought that people would shed these old systems as our species advanced scientifically and technologically. When it didn't, he took it upon himself to personally attempt to "fix" it. He boldly asked the hard questions, debated the toughest theists, and he's still swinging. I have watched many of his online debates as well as many other well known debaters go at it with theists. I myself have debated theists and none of them have convinced me anything other than that they're wrong, mistaken, delusional, programmed, etc. So here's what I'd like to do: Ultimately, I'd like to challenge any theistic group willing to have a public debate with us. 1. Find members from this group that would be interested in being a part of a debate team. 2. Have meet ups to pool together our ideas and information. Work on solid arguments to present that are scientifically factual, (I don't want to have our facts wrong. I have a few great exercises for improving our knowledge for debates). 3. Choose our best debater(s) to speak at these debates. Some of us will be better suited than others at this and we should choose accordingly. Anyone interested in this endeavor is welcome. If any of you have some background or education in these fields, that will be extremely helpful: Physical sciences, such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Cosmology, Geology, Archeology, Anthropology, or any combonation of these or any I didn't mention. Mental disciplines, such as Psychology, Theology, Philosophy, Hypnosis, Sociology, or any combonation of these or any unmentioned. If you have no background or education and have plenty of common sense or just want to put your input in, that would be welcome as well. Please feel free to email me if you're interested, or if you have any questions. I'm really looking forward to this. Thanks, Shawn Lorenzana
