San Diego’s most amazing Queen Anne Victorian house museum and cultural center. The Villa Montezuma is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum is owned by the City of San Diego and is currently open quarterly for free interior tours by the FOVM. It is recommended that you set up your free account on the City’s website in advance of registration. Please mark your calendars now for May 9th and register that day at https://apm.activecommunities.com/sdparkandrec/Home for the 9a time slot (or closest available). This is 4 weeks in advance of the June 6th interior tour event. Please RSVP here to let the group know of your interest, but, YOU MUST REGISTER TO ATTEND via the City's website - see link above. There may be some walk in spots available, but, sign up in advance to guanantee your spot. Note: there is no eating, drinking, or photography allowed inside the museum.
The Villa Montezuma is the Historic Jesse Shepard/”Francis Grierson” House. It was built in 1887 as the home of world famous pianist, author, and Spiritualist Jesse Shepard. Jesse began a writing career in San Diego and took the pen name “Francis Grierson,” a name that he used in life as well as for his writing. The Villa is located in the Sherman Heights Historic District of downtown San Diego, CA, at the corner of 20th & K Streets. The Sherman Heights Historic District is the largest historic district within San Diego; it has almost 400 contributing historic structures.
In 2015 the restoration of the foundation, roof, and chimneys was completed thanks to a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). Because of this federal grant, the museum must be open four times each year at no charge to the public. The FOVM conducts these historic tours on behalf of the City of San Diego, owner of the museum. The FOVM is working with the City of San Diego to restore the museum exterior.
Walking Tours of Sherman Heights
Learn more about the Villa and the Sherman Heights Historic District by taking a two-hour historical and architectural walking tour of Jesse Shepard’s neighborhood. You’ll see the exteriors of the original Sherman farmhouse and the mansion that Mayor Sherman built. You’ll learn how the growth of San Diego and of Sherman Heights are related. You’ll understand why our historic district’s period of significance is 1868 - 1930.
Walking tours are usually scheduled the first Saturday at 10:00 a.m., during spring through November, unless that day is a holiday (see the home page for current FOVM events). Reservations are required. We will confirm your reservation.
If you are an FOVM member, the tour is complimentary for you and a guest. If you are not a member, we suggest a $15 donation per person.
