Zard Apuya presents WIP: An Au-TOY-Biography, a deeply personal solo exhibition exploring life, identity, and growth through his hand-crafted designer toys. Apuya uses the designer toy platform as both medium and memoir. WIP, short for Work in Progress, reflects the belief that growth and refinement are never complete. The title speaks to the ongoing pursuit of improvement, the continuous development of skill, and the understanding that both art and identity are always evolving. The exhibition traces his journey from Guam to California, honoring family, heritage, ambition, and the defining moments that shaped his creative voice.
Created specifically for this exhibition, new works anchor the show and are tied to distinct chapters of Apuya’s life. From early family influences and formative experiences to professional
milestones and personal challenges, each piece represents a moment of growth. Together, these works form a chronological and emotional timeline told through designer toys. While the exhibition spans multiple chapters, Apuya’s signature hyper-realistic food sculptures remain central to the narrative. Over the years, he has developed a meticulous process that transforms familiar dishes and everyday snacks into striking designer toy forms. Through texture, scale, and detail, these works blur the line between object and illusion. Food becomes more than subject matter. It becomes a visual language used to represent memory, place, culture, and lived experience.
In WIP, polished works sit alongside pieces that reflect experimentation and evolution, reinforcing the idea that mastery is built through process. Each toy functions as both artifact and milestone, collectively forming an autobiographical story told through craft. Since beginning his practice in 2010, Apuya has created over 2,900 custom designer toys. His work has been exhibited nationally and is recognized for blending craftsmanship, cultural storytelling, and contemporary pop aesthetics.
