Using Clay with Neurodiverse Kids
Details
Clay offers a simple, fun way for kids and parents to connect and build important skills. Studies show that working with clay can improve motor skills, reduce anxiety and help children be more responsive and communicative. Clay gives kids an activity they can use to explore their feelings and experiences. They can talk about what they are making, but they can also express through the motions that naturally accompany big feelings. We can smash, push, pull, press, pound, zone out and start all over again. The process of finishing a clay piece involves shaping, drying, glazing and firing. Each stage gives young artists the time and space to slow down and learn from their experience. They may even change how they think about what's happened to them.
Bring your kid along for a youth-paired clay class. We'll explore activites you can use in the studio and at home to build motor skills, manage emotions and communicate more.
Open to one parent and one child ages 5-18. Sliding scale $20-60. Wear clothes that you don't mind getting some clay on.
