Lightning Network - Poon-Dryja's LN white paper - Sections 1 - 3
Details
Next year we plan to do a lot more reading to learn about the Lightning Network, particularly from the upcoming book "Mastering the Lightning Network".
This Saturday we'll be starting out with the original white paper "The Bitcoin Lightning Network: Scalable Off-Line Instant Payments" by Joseph Poon and Thaddeus Dryja (2016). https://lightning.network/lightning-network-paper.pdf
This will be the second time the Bitcoin Reading Group has gone through this paper. It's best done in chunks. Let's start with Sections 1 - 3 (pp 1-30). I'll share some diagrams I created the last time we read this paper. Created using a whiteboard and with feedback from others in the group, these are meant to make it all easier to understand. The diagrams in the paper itself are a bit busy and can be overwhelming.
Optionally you can attend the reading group discussion via zoom https://zoom.us/j/824914768
Some of us will also be meeting in person so that afterwards we can work together through the rest of the afternoon as part of a hackergarden to set up some LN nodes, on mac and linux. Feel free to join us in person. This Saturday we'll be at NextSpace in Santa Cruz. In the future, we may also meet in Los Gatos, Palo Alto, San Mateo, or San Francisco.
We'll start with the paper at 2pm.
To prepare, read sections 1-3, and then please sign up for a sub-section to present. As with all of the Los Gatos Reading Groups, we go through our readings section-by-section. For each section (or sub-section) of the reading a presenter describes the material to all of the rest of the reading group in his or her own words. We then discuss and ask questions about what was just covered by the presenter. Then we move on to to the next section and the next presenter.
