Twitter Developer Community Code of Conduct:

Events hosted at Twitter are covered under the Code of Conduct: https://developer.twitter.com/en/community/code-of-conduct.html

Additionally, for virtual events, please:

  • Join a few minutes early to allow hosts time to “accept” your join request before the event starts.
  • Mute your microphone and turn off your video.
  • Hold questions and comments until the end of the presentation. When you wish to ask a question, please indicate that in the chat window (“I have a question”) so that we may call upon you to unmute and ask your question. It is important that we take turns talking, and work together to facilitate an organized discussion to avoid multiple people talking at the same time.

Talks:

Title: Hiring Great SREs by Brian Rutkin

Abstract:
Hiring is hard. Hiring in tech is often harder because we tend to focus on concrete, measurable skills and often ignore or devalue soft skills since they’re not as easy to evaluate.

Everyone should be invested in the hiring practices at their company because these are the people that are going to make your company grow and be successful and these are the people you’re going to interact with every day, possibly for years.

In this structured talk I will offer some directed ways of thinking about hiring, conducting interviews, and performing valuations. While the major benefit is in shifting your thinking on the hiring process, I will also provide some concrete examples that can be used in practice. There may not be a single recipe everyone can follow but we can all cook with the same set of ingredients.

Bio:
Brian (pronouns: he/him) is a Sr. Staff SRE at Twitter where he works on Core Services and all the things they touch (so pretty much everything). Often that means just trying to ensure all the different services and people get along together.
