Join us for a full day of hiking, exploration, and discovery in one of Southern California’s most unique wilderness destinations.

We’ll hike the East Fork Trail to the iconic Bridge to Nowhere, then continue exploring Devil’s Gulch Falls and sections of the East Fork of the San Gabriel River. Along the way we’ll experience beautiful canyon scenery, flowing water, dramatic rock formations, river environments, and opportunities to explore beyond the standard trail.

This is more than a destination hike. It is an opportunity to move through a wild landscape, challenge ourselves physically, observe the natural environment, and enjoy meaningful conversations along the way.

We explore not simply to see new places, but to understand them more deeply.

• Up to 12 miles round trip
• Up to 2,000 feet of elevation gain

What to Expect
In addition to the established East Fork Trail, portions of our exploration may include:

• Rock hopping along the river
• Boulder scrambling and climbing over natural terrain
• Wading through shallow water
• Traversing uneven and rocky surfaces
• Exploring side canyons and river features
• Potential short canyon-wall scrambles where conditions permit

The exact route and extent of exploration will depend on weather, water levels, terrain conditions, and overall safety considerations.

This hike is intended for people who are comfortable with:

• Hiking on rocky and uneven terrain
• Creek crossings and getting wet
• Basic scrambling and route finding
• A full day of physical activity in a wilderness environment

No technical climbing equipment is required, but confidence, agility, and good judgment on challenging terrain are important.

The organizer will make reasonable efforts to promote a safe and enjoyable experience but cannot eliminate the inherent risks of outdoor activities. Participation is entirely voluntary, and you accept the risks associated with these activities.

Few hikes in North America reveal such a dramatic transformation of landscape, climate, and life in a single continuous ascent. Beginning beneath the light of a nearly full moon near the desert floor of Palm Springs, we will climb nearly two vertical miles through one of Southern California’s most remarkable natural gradients before reaching the alpine landscape of San Jacinto Peak.

The journey begins in the warmth of the desert night and unfolds gradually through changing environments as elevation reshapes the world around us. Moonlit desert gives way to the first signs of dawn, and as sunlight spreads across the Coachella Valley below, we continue upward into cooler mountain air. By sunrise, we have crossed remarkable transitions—from desert to mountain, from darkness to light, and from one ecosystem to another.

As we gain elevation, we will experience a living transition shaped by geology, climate, and altitude. Desert vegetation gradually gives way to chaparral-covered slopes and eventually to the cool conifer forests surrounding San Jacinto Peak. Along the way, we will observe how elevation influences temperature, vegetation, wildlife, weather, and even our own physiology.

More than a summit climb, this is an opportunity to experience the interconnected story of Earth and Life across a single mountainside—a journey through changing landscapes, ecosystems, and perspectives.

Timing and Conditions
By beginning in the evening, we aim to take advantage of cooler temperatures during the desert ascent while experiencing the unique atmosphere of a moonlit climb. Saturday, October 24, 2026, was intentionally selected to improve the probability of favorable conditions, including cooler temperatures, clearer skies, reduced thunderstorm risk, minimal snow or ice, and the opportunity to experience the mountain beneath a nearly full moon.

Mountain weather remains unpredictable, and safety will guide the final decision. The hike may be postponed or canceled if forecasts indicate conditions that significantly increase risk, including excessive heat, strong winds, thunderstorms, snow, ice, or other hazardous conditions.

Route and Challenge
Distance: Approximately 21 miles
Elevation Gain: Approximately 10,800 feet

Cactus to Clouds is an exceptionally strenuous endurance hike requiring excellent physical fitness, strong cardiovascular conditioning, and experience with long mountain outings. The combination of sustained climbing, significant elevation gain, darkness, and high altitude makes this one of Southern California’s most demanding hiking challenges.

Participants should be prepared for a long day of physical and mental endurance while managing changing temperatures, fatigue, hydration, nutrition, and altitude.

Please Bring

• Sufficient water for a full day of strenuous hiking (typically 4–6 liters depending on personal needs and conditions)
• Food and snacks sufficient for a long endurance effort
• Reliable headlamp with fresh batteries (backup light recommended)
• Personal first aid kit, including blister care supplies and any personal medications or emergency items you may need
• Navigation app with downloaded offline maps (such as Gaia GPS, CalTopo, AllTrails, or similar)
• Fully charged phone and backup battery
• Warm layers for the upper mountain
• Gloves, hat, and wind protection
• Sturdy hiking footwear
• Trekking poles (optional but recommended)

Participants should be comfortable using their own navigation tools and should not rely solely on following the group. Every hiker should be prepared to make informed decisions regarding their own safety throughout the journey.
